People have many things that they can do in their everyday lives to clean up our environment, and the bar shouldn’t be an exception. We all know that we should recycle our empty bottles, but there are more ways you can make the environment cleaner.

1. Buy “Green” Spirits

Many companys are making “Eco-Friendly” drinks now. There are many ways of doing this, such as using different ingrediants, or recycling.

    * 360 Vodka – Marketed as a eco-friendly vodka.
* Charbay Vodka – Organic Meyer Lemon, Pomegranate and Blood Orange
* Orange V Vodka – 100% organic neutral grain spirit
* Prairie Organic Vodka – Certified organic corn
* Reyka Vodka – Geothermal production facility
* Square One Organic Vodka – Certified organic
* Tru Organic Vodka – Certified organic

2. Recycle Empty Bottles

    * Make a box for all your glass and bottles, and take them to a recycling center. If you can, put them on the curb so the recycling company can pick it up.
* Make sure that the plastic can be recycled.
* Reuse the bottles!
* Some bottles can be used as a plant pot, or some other homemade uses.
* Use a soda siphon instead of buying bottled soda water.
* Cut up the corks and make things like drink coasters.

3. Ditch the Disposable and Plastic Barware
Think of all the things thrown away at a bar. Beyond cocktail ingredients, ice and garnishes everything else used in a bar is found made of a material that are washable and reusable. Some of these are a little harder to find than others, but it is possible and they can last for years. Try to avoid plastics. Use Bamboo instead of wood.

    * Bar Towels – cotton, use instead of paper towels
* Cocktail Napkins – linen instead of paper or use coasters
* Coasters – recycled materials, bamboo
* Straws – stainless steel
* Swizzle Sticks – glass, stainless steel
* Olive Picks – stainless steel, bamboo
* Cutting Board – bamboo

4. Buy used cups and glasswares.

    * When buying bar tools, choose high quality, durable products that will last longer than the cheaper ones.
* Shop garage sales and thrift stores barware and glasses. You can find smaller glassware and barware in many places instead of using modern ones.
* Some manufacturers are recycling the materials they use, such as turning empty wine bottles into glassware.
* Use local resources such as Freecycle or Craigslist to find free or cheap used tools.

5. Buy Fresh, Local Mixers & Garnishes

    * Fresh squeezed juices are better to use, because you won’t waste as many bottles.
* Use a manual juicer instead of an automatic one.
* Choose organic, locally grown fruits, herbs and other garnishes.
* Buy Free Trade coffees, teas, sugar and other common ingredients if available.
* Shop at farmer’s markets or things like it.
* Grow your own fruits, vegetables and herbs in a pesticide, growth hormone free garden.
* Compost the granish scraps. Citrus fruits take longer to compost, but if you cut them up they will compost faster.
* Bring reusable shopping bags to the market. Keep them in your car at all times so you don’t forget them.

6. Be Concious of How You Use & Make Ice
Ice is important in the bar. You probably use ice more than anything and that makes it hard to eliminate ice completely. The eco-print of ice is significant: you need water for the ice and electricity to freeze that water, then you dump half of it down the drain when you’re done.

    * Unplug your refrigerator’s ice maker.
* Switch to ice trays – you’re using the freezer’s power already, so eliminate the ice maker all together.
* Stock up on ice by storing finished cubes in a freezer bag or ice bucket.
* Use only the ice you need.

7. Conserve Energy

    * The refrigerator:
o Downsize to a small, energy efficient bar refrigerator that fits all of your mixers and fruits. Extra, empty space in the fridge uses more energy, so find one to fit your exact needs.
o Check the seal on your refrigerator door. A trick to check this is to put a dollar bill in the door and close it. If you can easily slip that bill out of the door, it is time to replace the seal.
o Use your kitchen refrigerator for your bar supplies.
* Unplug unused appliances like blenders and juicers when they aren’t being used.
* Switch to non-electric appliances when possible. Juicers and ice crushers are two great examples.

8. Conserve Water

    * Install a low-flow water faucet or one with a aerator in your wet bar.
* Wash all of your bar tools and glassware at once. If you have a double sink, fill one up with wash water and use the other for a rinse but don’t fill either sink beyond what you need.
* Don’t pre-rinse if you use a dishwasher.

9. Change your Lighting
Mood lighting is more appropriate in a bar than anywhere else, so use it to your energy advantage.

    * Don’t use lights unless you need them.
* Light candles or use efficient LED light strips to set a mood.
* Switch all your standard tungsten bulbs to Compact Flourescent Lamps (CFL). Recycle them when they do burn out as they do contain a high amount of mercury and are not landfill friendly.

10. Clean Green
A clean bar is a good bar, and you can ditch those chemical-ridden cleaners for greener alternatives.

    * Create a Natural Cleaning Kit for your bar (and home).
* Buy “green” cleaning products from the natural food stores for cleaning surfaces and bar tools.

Brammo, the electric motorcycle manufacturer, has announced the introduction of Empulse, a 100 mph naked electric sportbike (of course, naked is a relative term in electric bikes, mainly because they have really have nothing to show).

The Empulse is in fact a line of bikes comprising three models, all freeway capable. According to Brammo, the Empulses will be set apart by the range they are capable of sustaining: the 6.0 – 60 miles, 8.0 – 80 mile and 10.0 – 100 miles.The bikes use, apparently for the first time, the Brammo Power battery pack and Brammo Powervehicle management system.

“The Empulse reveals the significant price performance that we can deliver using Brammo Power technology. Just like it did with the Enertia Powercycle, Brammo has again raised the bar in terms of electrical drivetrain innovation and time to market,” Brian Wismann, Brammo Empulse designer said in a release.

Although this week Brammo presented only a prototype of the bike, the bike maker already setprices for the line. Empulse 6.0 is priced at $9,995, Empulse 8.0 at $11,995 and Empluse One Hundred at $13,995. All bikes are eligible for federal and state tax incentives, bringing the price of the 10.0 for instance as low to as $7,000.

Novelo is a hybrid vehicle powered by human movement and electric power. The vehicle is based on the body of a velomobile but features additional electric motors for high speed commutes. The vehicle uses parallelogram linkage that allows it to tilt through corners. The fairing combination of a horizontal and vertical airfoil to better aerodynamics and allow the NoVelo to hit a top speed of 50kph using the built-in 300W hub motor.

Novelo uses a parallelogram linkage that allows the vehicle to tilt through corners. A small movement of the steering handles turns the front wheels that in turn changes the weight distribution and cases the vehicle to tilt. When the steering is centred the vehicle returns upright. This results in Novelo being able to corner faster and with more stability than current velomobiles, as well as having a much smaller turning circle. The tilting mechanism allows the centre of gravity to be higher, resulting in a vehicle which is more visible to other road users and hence safer.

The fairing uses a combination of a horizontal and vertical aerofoil to provide both outstanding aerodynamics and stability in windy conditions. The estimated Cda (measure of aerodynamic performance) would result in a speed of 31 mph from just 250 watts of power, less than two light bulbs. This energy can easily be provided by the user or through an in built 300-watt hub motor or both.

The fairing is manufactured from a sandwich of Kevlar, flax fibre and foam honeycomb. Kevlar is used for its impact absorbing characteristics and flax as a renewable alternative to carbon fibre. Both materials are easily moulded into complex shapes and allow the internal frame to be moulded into the fairing in a monocoque process removing the need for an internal space frame and reduces manufacturing time and assembly steps. “
